Internet search engines change their algorithms on a daily basis, but there are some things that are fairly consistent when it comes to SEO. The main goal of SEO is to tell search engines what your chiropractic practice is all about. When performing search engine optimization, there are five common mistakes chiropractors can make which hurt their practice’s search rankings. These five mistakes are: duplicate content, keyword stuffing, lack of content, link farming, and old or stale content. There are a variety of other mistakes practices make in SEO, but these are the top five most common mistakes.
Duplicate content on a chiropractic website or blog refers to any text copied from another source on the internet. Chiropractic practices often inadvertently get into trouble by copying text directly from a competitor, vendor, or a chiropractic equipment manufacturer. What many chiropractors don’t know is copying one’s own content has the same negative consequences. For example, publishing the same content on a web page, a blog, and a press release is classified as duplicate content in SEO.
When it comes to SEO, it’s best to put relevant chiropractic keywords in the text content. However, when keywords are involved, less is more. Chiropractic practices can negatively affect rankings by stuffing a 500 word article with 30 occurrences of one keyword. Not only does it create a bad user experience, it hurts search rankings.
SEO is predicated on a great user experience, so a website or blog with little to no content creates a bad experience and negatively impacts SEO. A chiropractic website that has one paragraph of information is a waste of a potential patient’s time and increases the bounce rate. If a potential patient thinks a website is bad, chances are the search engines do as well.
A link farm refers to a group of websites which were created solely to provide inbound links to other websites. Relevant, helpful links are excellent for SEO, but link farms are typically unrelated, sham websites that lack authority. Never buy links or use a link farm for SEO purposes since they will ALWAYS hurt your rankings.
A potential patient that visits a website with clearly outdated and stale content has a bad user experience. Fresh, updated content and websites are better for users and for SEO. Chiropractic websites with blogs are easier to keep updated, attract more visitors, and improve SEO.
If you have accidentally made one of these mistakes, don’t worry; it can be fixed. It may take a little bit of time to correct, but it will make a big difference.
