Proper SEO Tagging for Your Video

By:

There are a few basic practices that can make a big difference in whether your videos are found in a YouTube search. Since the presence of an embedded video can affect your website ranking, it becomes all the more crucial to use the appropriate tools to promote your video and your website. Here, we’ll be looking at best practices for SEO Video Tagging.

5 things that will help with overall video optimization include:

  1. Locally Optimized Titles
  2. Descriptions – A Quick Synopsis of the Video
  3. Closed Captioning
  4. Tagging
  5. Transcription of Audio

As we’ve already touched on optimized titles and descriptions in previous blogs, we’ll cover the other three in this blog.

Closed Captioning

Search engines want the content that they return to be accessible to anyone and everyone. Adding closed captioning to your video for the hearing-impaired is an excellent idea for a variety of reasons, such as making it accessible to a broader audience and for SEO content purposes.

Use Keyword Tagging to Optimize Videos

Tagging

The basic theory surrounding tagging is to do a 50/50 split. Half of your tags will be directly related to the video. For example, if your video is “Video Optimization Techniques,” half of your tags should be keywords like ‘Video, Optimization, YouTube, and Techniques.’

The second half of your tags should be broad, generic terms. In the example above the second half of your tags would look something like ‘Videos, SEO, Ranking’. Think of them as half specific tags, and half emotion or genre tags.

With that in mind, use the YouTube Keyword tool to find the top performing keywords to use. If you often make similar videos, set up default tags using YouTube’s default feature. If you are optimizing for a set of keywords, it is always a best practice to have the terms in the video dialogue match the tags that you are putting in YouTube’s tagging section. The more relevant the dialogue is to the tags, the better the SERP. Relevancy is very important to Google and YouTube’s ranking algorithms.

Audio Transcription

It is always helpful to have an audio based video in documentary or voiceover format so the content can be crawled. Google does crawl video content, but the content can be better indexed by Google if you post the video’s audio content in paragraph format underneath the video, on a webpage, and/or a blog post.

In conclusion, YouTube is the number 2 search engine in the world and there is a lot off opportunity to not only get your video ranked higher, but your website associated with it as well. When tagged properly, YouTube will not only give more exposure to the video, but your website and your brand.
